| Title: | Neck artery blockage |
| Purpose: | Carotid artery occlusion can be a dangerous factor for TIA and stroke. The study will look at the outcome after brain artery/vein bypass surgery versus best medical therapy. |
| Study Number: | 107409 |
| Number of Patients: | 20 |
| Elgibility: |
Eligible patients will have had a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) within the past 120 days and documented obstruction of a carotid (neck) artery. The patients from this site will be flown to Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., for an oxygen extraction PET scan to determine final eligibility.
|
| Treatment: | Patients are randomized into the study. They have a 50 percent chance of enrolling in the surgical procedure and a 50 percent chance of enrolling in aspirin only. |
