Title:Neck artery blockage
Purpose:Carotid artery occlusion can be a dangerous factor for TIA and stroke. The study will look at the outcome after brain artery/vein bypass surgery versus best medical therapy.

Study Number:107409
Number of Patients:20
Elgibility: Eligible patients will have had a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) within the past 120 days and documented obstruction of a carotid (neck) artery. The patients from this site will be flown to Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., for an oxygen extraction PET scan to determine final eligibility.
Treatment:Patients are randomized into the study. They have a 50 percent chance of enrolling in the surgical procedure and a 50 percent chance of enrolling in aspirin only.
