Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Center

Loyola's Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Center was the first of its kind in greater Chicago, and is still one of the few centers in the country that offers a single-center location for the diagnosis and treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders. At Loyola, urogynecologists (doctors with the combined expertise of urologists and gynecologists) provide the most advanced care available for women with problems related to the lower urinary tract and the pelvic floor (the group of muscles, ligaments and nerves that support and help control the vagina, uterus, bladder and rectum).

Pelvic floor disorders such as pelvic organ prolapse, urinary or fecal incontinence or difficulty urinating can sometimes be embarrassing, difficult to talk about and they can affect the quality of your life. It is important that you speak with your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms. If you and your physician decide that you need to see a urogynecologist, choosing a physician at the Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Center is a wise choice.

They will make your experience as comfortable as possible as they partner with you and your physician to develop the best treatment plan for you. The physicians, nurses and support staff have many years of experience in dealing with these very personal conditions.

At Loyola, we believe in treating the whole person, not just the specific condition. Your medical team may consult with a range of other specialists including:

  • gastroenterologists
  • colorectal surgeons
  • radiologists
  • psychologists
  • physical therapists
  • specialists in rehabilitation
Together they will suggest a complete treatment plan for your specific condition and needs. And, of course, our physicians work closely with your own doctor. Our goal is to return you to your physician's care, either fully recovered or with a plan that you and your doctor can manage together.

Treatment options may include:

  • diet and behavior modification
  • pelvic floor exercises
  • biofeedback
  • physical therapy
  • acupuncture
  • medications
  • surgery

The Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Center provides consultation for a full range of conditions that involve the pelvic floor and lower urinary tract including the following:

  • Urinary Incontinence - the inability to control bladder function.
  • Fecal Incontinence - the inability to control bowel function.
  • Urinary or Fecal Fistula - an abnormal connection between the urinary tract or the bowel resulted in uncontrolled loss of urine or stool.
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse - (falling down) of the bladder, rectum, bowel, uterus, or vagina from normal position.
  • Urinary Retention
  • Congenital Abnormalities - of the pelvic floor such as vaginal agenesis (absence of a uterus).
  • Urethral Masses - such as urethral diverticulum (bulging pouches along the urethra)
  • Birth Injuries to the Pelvic Floor
