Honoring Unspoken Grief

What is HUG?
Honoring Unspoken Grief (HUG) is a program designed to offer educational, emotional and spiritual support to parents who experience the loss of an infant through miscarriage, still birth or neonatal death. At Loyola we recognize the need of some parents to acknowledge the life and death of their baby(ies) in a supportive environment.

Who is part of HUG?
HUG was started by a group of nurses here at Loyola and is made up of variety of health-care professionals. We have many years of diverse experience within our disciplines and have a special interest in perinatal bereavement.

Our staff includes:

  • Nurses
  • Physicians
  • Chaplains
  • Social workers
  • Genetic counselors

When you join the HUG group you will receive:

  • A special keepsake, to remember your baby, at the time of your loss
  • A phone consultation and follow-up after you leave the hospital
  • Helpful bereavement literature

If you know someone who, or if you yourself, could benefit from this healing service call (708) 327-HUGS (4847) to reach our confidential voicemail. We will return your call.

Please provide the following information when you call:

  • Child's full name
  • Date of birth
  • Approximate date of loss (if different from date of birth)
  • Nature of loss
  • Parent's phone number
  • Your full name (if not the patient) and your phone number

Join a Support Group
During a difficult time, being able to share your grief with others who understand what you are going through can ease the burden you may feel. Our experienced staff offers a support group, Journey Toward Healing that is designed specifically for parents grieving this type of loss.

The group meets from 6-7:30pm once a week for six consecutive weeks at:
Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

To learn about more about the group and for the dates of the next session, call 888-LUHS-888 and ask for Pastoral Care.
