Hips

Our patients can benefit from the vast experience of the highly specialized Loyola hip service. This team is comprised of physicians and fellowship-trained hip surgeons who provide non-surgical and surgical solutions to address the full spectrum of hip disorders. From a simple hip medication injection or course of physical therapy to a joint-preserving surgical intervention or total hip replacement, our team has the expertise to provide complete care.

The Loyola hip surgery team has specialized training in the following surgical interventions:

Joint preservation techniques

  • Core decompression
  • Femoral osteotomy
  • Hip arthroscopy
  • Periacetabular osteotomy
  • Surgical hip dislocation

Hip replacement surgery

  • Complex primary hip replacement
  • Partial hip replacement
  • Minimally invasive techniques
  • Resurfacing hip arthroplasty
  • Revision hip replacement
  • Total hip replacement

Patient Education
We believe strongly in patient education and preparing you for any surgical procedures. Patients who undergo joint replacement may participate in a special class led by orthopaedic nurses, physical therapists and social workers. Classes help our patients:

  • Understand the complexities of their surgery
  • Set expectations for recovery
  • Determine discharge planning needs such as outpatient physical therapy
  • Identify any special equipment needed at home after surgery

We also have prepared a list of answers to questions you may have regarding hip surgery.

Trauma
Team members also are fellowship-trained to care for severe trauma to the hip and pelvis region. Training includes care for:

  • Complex fractures of the pelvis
  • Fractures of the pelvis and hip area that don’t heal (nonunions)
  • Fractures of the pelvis and hip area that heal in a poor position (malunions)
  • Severe fractures of the hip and acetabulum
