Getting a Second Opinion

Loyola’s orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation offers you a second opinion by experts in the fields of orthopaedics, rehabilitation and podiatric medicine. All of our orthopaedic surgeons have undergone intense fellowship training in their specialty area of orthopaedic surgery.

Our specialists have expertise in orthopaedic problems related to hand, foot, ankle, elbow, shoulder, neck, back, pelvis and knee. In addition, our specialists include orthopaedic surgeons specializing in pediatrics, oncology and trauma.

The highly trained podiatric surgeons provide expert second opinions regarding podiatric foot care. The rehabilitation physicians offer their expertise on a wide range of conditions related to rehabilitation, pain and non-operative care.

When to Get a Second Opinion
You have the right to obtain a second opinion regarding the diagnosis, treatment and management of your condition. A second opinion may be helpful when:

  • You are planning to undergo a major surgery that is not urgent in nature.
  • Your current physician has been unable to make a diagnosis yet you still are experiencing problems.
  • You have concerns about your current treatment plan.
  • You are considering undergoing a new or experimental treatment.
  • You have been given more than one treatment option for your problem.
  • You have been told that nothing can be done to address your current problem.
  • After undergoing treatment for your problem, your problem continues or reoccurs.
  • You would like to know if you have other options for treatment of your condition.
  • You are required to undergo a second opinion by your insurance carrier.

What to Bring for a Second Opinion
You are encouraged to bring the following information and records to a second-opinion appointment:

  • Copies of records that are relevant to your condition
  • Copies of any X-rays, MRIs, CT scans (if they have been done) that are relevant to your condition
  • A list of questions you would like to ask the physician
  • A list of any medications you may be taking
  • A friend or family member to be a second set of ears
