Psychology and Neuropsychology

Psychologists study, diagnose and treat mental and emotional problems. Loyola University Health System’s (Loyola) psychologists work with people of all ages and have a broad range of special interests. They offer therapy to children, adults and families to help them adjust to change and manage life stresses. As part of a major medical center, the faculty also has special expertise in helping patients and their families cope with illness and pain.

Faculty in the section of neuropsychology are trained to relate thinking and behavior to brain and body functions. They work closely with other medical specialties in diagnosing and treating emotional and behavioral problems that are related to illnesses.

Outpatient Counseling for Adults and Children
Psychologists provide counseling to children, adults, couples and families at outpatient locations in Maywood, North Riverside, LaGrange, Oakbrook Terrace and Darien. Adults are treated for depression, mood disorders, adjustment or personality, stress management and other issues. Children ages 5 and up are treated for emotional disorders, behavior problems, abuse and other issues. Specialized adolescent psychology is available for children 11 and up. At a school-based clinic at Proviso East High School a psychologist offers counseling, mental health education and prevention.

Inpatient Consultations
Psychologists work on a team with psychiatrists and social workers to assess hospital patients in need of mental health evaluation or treatment. Psychologists also work on multidisciplinary teams evaluating patients prior to organ transplantation.

Adjustment to Illness and Recovery
Psychologists offer support for adult and pediatric patients at Loyola who are adjusting to illness or chronic pain. The goal is to help people cope emotionally and reduce the impact of the illness on their day-to-day functioning. Psychologists work closely with patients being treated for cancer, chronic pain, urological problems, burns, trauma and cardiovascular disease.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can be used effectively to help people adjust to pain and illness. This type of therapy focuses on the relationship between thought patterns and mood and aims to help the patient think in a way that is conducive to, rather than undermining, their daily functioning. Techniques of this therapy include thought restructuring, thought stoppage, examining underlying beliefs and activity scheduling.

Neuropsychology
Neuropsychology is a specialty of psychology concerned with how behavior and mental skills are related to brain structures and processes. Many different illnesses, injuries and genetic defects may cause a change in mental abilities such as concentration, reasoning, memory, language, perception and personality. Using specialized tests, neuropsychologists help diagnose and design treatment plans for illnesses and injuries that influence thinking and behavior, such as epilepsy, autism, stroke, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and brain trauma.

In particular, patients recovering from neurological problems or neurosurgery may benefit from neuropsychological testing and treatment. Psychological treatments may include cognitive rehabilitation, behavior management and psychotherapy to help the patient improve their day-to-day mood and functioning.
