Psychiatry
Psychiatrists
are physicians who care for people with mental illnesses
and emotional and behavioral problems. They take a broad
view of these illnesses and problems, considering the
physical, psychological and social aspects. The expertise
of Loyola University Health System’s (Loyola)
psychiatrists is so highly regarded that the division
attracts psychiatry residents nationwide to its large
and well-recognized training program. An active educational
program translates into thorough, leading-edge care
for patients.
With
ongoing research into causes and treatments for psychiatric
problems, Loyola’s psychiatrists can offer patients
the latest medical treatments and opportunities to participate
in clinical drug trials. Ongoing research includes investigations
into the biochemical, endocrinological and immunological
aspects of psychotic, mood and anxiety disorders, psychological
and biological elements of sexual function disorders,
substance abuse use disorders, and psychoses.
Outpatient
Adult Psychiatry
Psychiatrists are available at outpatient locations
in Maywood, Forest Park, Darien and Wheaton to treat
patients with depression, mood and memory disorders,
anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia,
behavioral consequences of traumatic brain injury and
other problems. Couples and individuals can find help
for sexual problems through the multi-disciplinary sexual
dysfunction clinic that has served more than 1,500 couples
in the past 30 years.
Major
Mental illness and Substance Abuse
Mental illness, substance abuse and other serious mental
health problems requiring more aggressive care are treated
through an intense outpatient program in collaboration
with West Lake Hospital. Loyola psychiatrists also see
patients in psychiatric inpatient units at West Lake
Hospital, Hines VA Hospital and Madden Mental Health
Center.
Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry
Specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry treat
children and teens for depression, attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, behavioral
problems, developmental disabilities and other problems
with age-appropriate therapies, including play therapy,
counseling and medications. Child psychiatrists consult
with physicians at the Ronald McDonald® Children’s
Hospital at Loyola University Medical Center to treat
hospitalized children with mental health issues.
Geriatric
Psychiatry
At outpatient sites in Maywood and Forest Park psychiatrists
evaluate and treat seniors for depression, memory loss
and other mental health issues. At Loyola’s Senior
Health Center at Forest Park, psychiatry residents conduct
group therapy sessions to address senior-related issues
such as coping with losses and social activity limitations.
Emergency
and Inpatient Consultation
A psychiatric emergency service is available to evaluate
patients admitted 24-hours per day. In the hospital,
a consultation service assesses medically or surgically
ill individuals in need of mental health evaluation
or treatment. The psychiatry-led inpatient team includes
psychologists who focus on counseling, evaluation and
neuropsychological testing and social workers who focus
on social issues, discharge planning and family communication.
