Otolaryngology
- Head and Neck Surgery
Specialists
in Loyola University Health System’s (Loyola)
Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery
are widely regarded as leaders in their field. They
care for adults and children with diseases and injuries
affecting the ear, nose, throat, and nearby parts of
the head and neck. These disorders can impact a patient’s
hearing, speaking, swallowing, breathing, balance and
appearance – and have huge quality of life implications.
The otolaryngology faculty members apply their considerable
expertise to address the health problem while, above
all, being sensitive to the patient’s lifestyle
and self-esteem.
Loyola’s
otolaryngologists use high-tech diagnostic methods to
design treatment plans that may include non-surgical
therapies, leading surgical treatments, reconstructive
surgery and rehabilitation as needed. Patients come
from throughout the Midwest – some even nationally
and internationally – to seek the expertise of
Loyola’s otolaryngologists. The department has
earned its reputation through its extensive experience
and success in treating difficult cases. For example,
Loyola has treated more than 500 patients with acoustic
neuroma (a benign growth in the inner ear that can cause
hearing loss and even death) in the last eight years
while the average hospital performs only one to five
of these operations annually.
The
faculty members also distinguished themselves through
their research. They are leading presenters at research
forums such as the North American Skull Base Society.
Major research is ongoing in head and neck cancer, infectious
diseases of the head and neck, reconstruction of frontal
sinus deformities and voice disorders.
