Neuromuscular
Disorders and Peripheral Neuropathies
This
center consists of neurologists experienced in evaluating
patients with various neuromuscular disorders including
peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, muscular dystrophy,
myasthenia gravis, motor neuron disease, post-polio
muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Each neurologist is board certified in clinical neurophysiology
and an expert in utilizing nerve conduction studies
and EMG to correctly diagnose these various disorders.
Outpatient nerve and muscle biopsies are interpreted
by qualified neuropatholgists. Wherever indicated, immunotherapies
such as plasmapheresis or high-dose immunoglobulin are
readily available. In a specialized clinic, botulinum
toxin injections are performed as a new and effective
treatment for localized dystonias (abnormal muscle tension).
Loyola University Health System (Loyola) is a referral
center for the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation and treats
a substantial number of patients suffering from this
rare disease.
