Facial Nerve Paralysis and Disorders

Facial nerve paralysis can be caused by a number of disorders. However, they all need medical attention quickly. Loyola University Health System otolaryngologists (also called, ear, nose and throat doctors or ENTs) are among the first in the country to offer leading-edge services for patients with these difficult-to-diagnose conditions.

Facial paralysis can occur as the result of a virus-caused palsy, an injury, birth defect, or a tumor. Treatments include medication and/or surgery.

The Loyola facial paralysis program has an entire facial paralysis team that is focused on the care of patients with this condition. The team includes specialists in:

  • otolaryngology
  • neuroradiology
  • neurosurgery
  • ophthalmology
  • physical therapy
  • plastic surgery
  • radiotherapy

Together, this team has treated more than 5,000 patients with facial nerve disorders.
