Stroke and Other Cerebrovascular Disease

Loyola provides aggressive medical management, the latest in diagnosis, treatment and leading-edge surgery to treat stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA) and other cerebrovascular disease. Loyola's Stroke Center has a nationally recognized team of experts in nearly every facet of stroke-related care, including emergency medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, neuroradiology, rehabilitative services, social work, nutrition, pharmacy and specialty nursing. Together, these experts treat patients with a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach.

Cerebrovascular disease refers to any disease of the blood vessels and, especially, the arteries that supply the brain. Stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts; the blood flow stays blocked, and the brain has permanent damage.

Strokes and TIAs may be caused by different factors ranging from high blood pressure and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) to a blood-clotting disorder or inflammation of the blood vessels. Rapid diagnosis is critical for a best possible recovery. Medicines may be used initially and then treatments may shift to rehabilitation and prevention of other problems and future strokes.

Loyola’s neurosciences program offers a wide array of services for the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular events, including medications, risk factor reduction, carotid endarterectomy and stenting.
