Indications/Exclusions

The indications for lung transplantation are end-stage lung disease or pulmonary vascular disease, which may include the following:

  • Emphysema
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Lymphangioleiomyomatosis
  • Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Pulmonary hypertension

Indications for Heart-Lung Transplant
Indications for a heart-lung transplant include a combination of end-stage lung and heart disease, which may include:

  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Eisenmenger's syndrome

Excluding Reasons
Exclusion criteria include the following:

  • Active smoking
  • Active substance abuse and/or alcohol abuse
  • HIV positive
  • End-stage organ failure other than lung or heart/lung
  • Cancer with a risk for metastasis
  • Mechanical ventilation or ventilator dependence
  • Panresistant burkholderia cepacia
  • Prednisone use greater than 20mg daily
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Poor nutritional status
  • Psychosocial issues
