Why Choose Us?
The Loyola University Health System
lung transplantation team is a national leader on many
fronts.
One of Seven Nationwide --
Loyola's lung transplant program is one
of only seven in the United States that has completed
500 transplants or more, according to the Organ Procurement
and Transplantation Network (OPTN).
A Better Survival Rate
-- Loyola's three-year survival rate for lung transplant
is 76 percent, whereas the expected survival rate is
66 percent (for the period between July 2000 and December
2002). This expected rate is based on comparisons with
centers nationwide that have a similar mix of patients
types.
More Transplants Than Any Other
Illinois Center -- The
OPTN reports that Loyola has performed more than 87
percent of the lung transplantations in the state. In
2005, Loyola's transplant team performed 38 lung transplants.
A Resource for the Region -- Individuals from more than 12 different states have
traveled to Loyola for this life-extending operation.
An Established
Team of Experts -- Every patient who undergoes
a lung transplant is followed by an experienced
team with a solid history of collaboration. The
team includes at least 10 different team members, including
thoracic/cardiovascular surgeons, pulmonary physicians,
procurement nurses, infectious disease specialists,
physical therapists, occupational therapists, anesthesiologists,
immunologists, social workers, dieticians, pastoral
care staff and, at times, other specialists, including
gastroenterologists, urologists, cardiologists and research
coordinators.
Finding New Answers -- The researchers in Loyola's lung transplant team are leading basic
immunology research to find new treatment paths for
the biggest hurdle in lung transplant: chronic rejection,
a condition that can shave months and years from a transplant
patient's life expectancy.
