Children’s and Adult Congenital Heart Disorders

A congenital heart disorder is one that is inborn or existing at birth. It occurs because a part of the heart or vascular system didn’t develop normally prior to birth. These disorders can affect blood flow and other aspects of heart and vascular health later in life.

At the Ronald McDonald® Children’s Hospital of Loyola University Medical Center, Loyola health-care providers are helping children with heart and vascular problems live active, normal lives. The experienced team of pediatric cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons knows just what it takes to identify and, when necessary, correct heart problems as early in a child’s life as possible—as early as 20 weeks into pregnancy. This gives everyone the opportunity to prepare for possible complications during delivery.

Trained to care for both pediatric and young adult patients, the pediatric cardiologists and vascular specialists at the Ronald McDonald® Children’s Hospital of Loyola perform a broad array of advanced diagnostic and interventional procedures. They also can treat some congenital heart defects and abnormal heart rhythms without surgery. This includes closing holes in the heart, widening narrowed valves and using radio frequency to eliminate cardiac arrhythmias.

Offering a complete continuum of care, Loyola also treats adults with congenital heart disorders. Today, approximately 500 patients ranging in age from 15 years to 86 years are enrolled in Loyola's Adult Congenital Heart Clinic. This team’s commitment to their patients goes beyond providing basic health care. Educational resources are provided to the patient and family, addressing the physical, medical and psychosocial aspects of this disease.
