Research

Research to advance medical knowledge and safeguard excellence in patient care is paramount at Loyola University Medical Center. Loyola physicians, nurses and researchers are actively engaged in basic science, translational, and clinical studies to extend our knowledge about the development, treatment and prevention of all types of heart disease.

Fundamental research into the causes and consequences of high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure is conducted within the research division of the Cardiovascular Institute. Here, cell and molecular biologists study normal and diseased tissues of the heart and vascular system in order to gain new knowledge about the function of the heart and blood vessels. Our scientists are making use of many of the advances in molecular genetics and gene delivery in order to evaluate new treatments to restore health and prevent injury to the heart and vasculature. These basic studies are complemented by a growing list of translational investigations into new drug treatments for coronary thrombosis and other disorders of blood coagulation.

Loyola’s cardiovascular clinical research includes studies about many facets of heart disease that can be grouped into four general categories: 1) coronary intervention studies for people with suspected or definite coronary artery disease who have had or may need angioplasty, intracoronary stents, or other treatments; 2) heart failure and cardiac transplantation studies; 3) electrophysiology studies for people with heart rhythm problems that might be treated with medications, pacemaker or cardiac defibrillator insertion, and 4) thoracic and cardiovascular surgery studies that investigate techniques and clinical outcomes after various surgical interventions including pre-transplant interventions for end-stage heart disease. The clinical studies are conducted in people who volunteer to contribute information about the natural history and usual care for a spectrum of cardiology problems. They also may test promising new treatments or compare different treatments to see if one is superior to other treatments.
