Radiation oncology is a discipline of medicine that provides management of diverse forms of cancer. The aim of radiation therapy is to deliver a precisely measured dose of irradiation to a defined tumor volume with minimal distress to surrounding normal tissue, resulting in eradication of the tumor, a higher quality of life and prolongation of survival. With its highly trained faculty, staff, and state-of-the-art radiation treatment equipment, the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Loyola University Medical Center is considered one of the best radiation oncology centers for patient care and research in the midwest. In addition, the department offers a number of unique and state of the art treatment programs and treatment modalities for cancer therapy. These techniques include:

  • 3-Dimensional conformal radiotherapy
  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) 
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic radiotherapy 
  • Brachytherapy 
  • Ultrasound-guided transperineal prostate implant program 
  • Total body irradiation (TBI) 
  • Total skin electrons theraDV (TSET) 
  • High dose rate (HDR) and low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy 
  • Unfractionated and fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS/T) 
  • External beam radiation therapy 
  • Endovascular radiotherapy 

Clinical/Basic Science Research
Radiation oncology is a participant in national and international research efforts. We offer our patients the choice of participation in state-of-the-art clinical research efforts through:

  • Cooperative group studies, including RTOG and SWOG, to determine the value of
    combined chemo-radiotherapy for lymphoma and cancers of the lung, head and neck,
    breast, and gastrointestinal system 
  • Cooperative group studies of dose aescalation for various cancers (lung, rectum, etc.)
    utilizing 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy 
  • Parotid preservation studies to prevent xyrostomia (dry mouth) in patients with head and
    neck cancers
