Melanoma Clinic
Special Clinics

At Loyola University Health System's (Loyola) Melanoma Clinic, multidisciplinary teams of health professionals have access to the latest techniques in cancer therapy, research and support. They actively work to meet the medical and emotional needs of patients newly diagnosed with melanoma, and requiring care.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Unlike other types of skin cancer, which include basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma has a strong tendency to metastasize, or spread, to other locations in the body, such as the lymph nodes, bones, lungs and brain. However, when detected in its earliest stages and treated properly, melanoma is highly curable. For early, thin malignant melanoma localized to the skin, the five-year relative survival rate is 96 percent. About 81 percent of melanomas are diagnosed at a local stage.

Gerard V. Aranha, MD, chief of surgical oncology and professor of surgery at Loyola, has more than 20 years of cancer surgery experience. He is Loyola's chief investigator for a national clinical research study investigating the use of sentinel node biopsy to improve the treatment of melanoma.

Joseph Clark, MD, a hematologist/oncologist, is an associate professor of medicine at Loyola.

Brian Nickoloff, MD, PhD, professor of pathology and director of the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center's skin cancer program, is among the top clinical dermapathology researchers in the world.

Steven J. Goulder, MD, Chief of Dermatologic Surgery and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Loyola, is a Board Certified Dermatologist and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon with specialty training in Melanoma.

Eva Parker, MD is a board certified dermatologist and clinical instructor of medicine and dermatology.
