Adult Hematology/Oncology Unit
Inpatient/Outpatient
The
Adult Hematology/Oncology Inpatient Unit is a 20-bed
medical unit specializing in the treatment of hematology/oncology
patients. Patients’ conditions range from newly diagnosed
to end-stage disease.
We
offer a wide range of services from Loyola University
Health System (Loyola) professionals. The registered
professional nurses care for a variety of patients who
receive chemotherapy protocols and participate in national
clinical trials. This includes management of side effects,
chemotherapy, multiple blood component therapy, management
and care of various venous access devices and pain management.
We
also care for autologous/peripheral blood stem cell
transplant patients in all phases of the transplant
process as well as those readmitted with post-transplant
complications. In addition, hospice inpatient services
also are provided in two designated patient rooms. Nurses
caring for the hospice patient focus on the continued
physical comfort, mental peace and spiritual needs of
the patient and their caregivers.
Patient
care in the Adult Hematology/Oncology Inpatient Unit
is directed by the nurse manager. The nurses on the
chemotherapy team are specialty nurses who initiate
the chemotherapy and biotherapy treatments for hospitalized
cancer patients. Education of the patient and family
is an integral part of this process and includes discussion
of the diagnosis, treatment plan, and symptom management.
