Bone Marrow Transplantation


Indications for Transplant
Blood and marrow transplantation are treatments used for a variety of cancers, including leukemia, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and some solid tumors such as breast, ovarian, testicular, and neuroblastoma. Additional indications include myelodysplasia, congenital immunodeficiencies, and hematologic disorders such as severe aplastic anemia, sickle cell anemia and Fanconi’s anemia.

Excluding Reasons
Several factors are considered when determining an individual’s eligibility for transplant. These include extent of the disease, response to previous therapy, age of the individual, underlying medical conditions, functional status, and availability of a suitable donor (when an allogeneic transplant is being considered).
