Here we provide intensive care for sick children requiring a range of care from close monitoring to advanced life support. Our PCCU is recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health as a Certified Pediatric Critical Care Center for Excellence.
Our PCCU is the only Level 1 Trauma center in the Chicago suburbs approved by the state of Illinois for care of pediatric patients. A multidiciplinary team of specialists is available around the clock, seven days a week, to proivide the highest level of sophisticated care to critically ill children who have been injured, burned or who have other severe medical conditions.
A team of full-time, board-certified pediatric intensivists (intensive care specialists) work together with pediatric medical and surgical specialists, specially trained nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dieticians and therapists to provide care for the critically ill children. Pediatric intensivists are complemented by a rotating senior resident physician so that children in the unit have a specialized physician’s attention 24-hours a day.
In addition to its medical capabilities, the PCCU treats the human spirit of our patients and their families. Dedicated social workers, child-life specialists and a schoolteacher are trained to help children and families cope with the special needs of a hospitalization and help ease the child’s anxiety. In keeping with Loyola’s Catholic Jesuit tradition, chaplain services for all faiths are available at all times.
