Becoming A Patient: The Health-Care Team

The professionals of the Ronald McDonald® Children’s Hospital of Loyola University Medical Center collaborate as a multidisciplinary team to care for your child and family. During your child’s stay, you will meet many physicians, nurses and health-care experts who may include:

Attending Physician: Your attending physician is the member of the medical staff who is primarily responsible for your child’s medical care.

Registered Nurses: The nurses are specially trained and educated in pediatric care. They will collaborate with physicians to develop and implement your child’s treatment plan.

Resident Physicians: Residents are doctors in training who are specializing in the field of pediatrics or even further in a subspecialty.

Medical Students: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine students work under the supervision of attending and resident physicians. You may meet some of them during your child’s hospitalization.

Dietitians: Registered dietitians for children are available to help your child receive the best nutrition possible.

Pharmacists: Specially educated pediatric pharmacists work closely with physicians to identify the most effective drug therapy for your child.

Chaplains: The Department of Pastoral Care has a staff of interdenominational chaplains specially prepared for hospital ministry, focusing on the emotional and spiritual needs of your family. Services include full sacramental ministry, baptisms (available on-call, day or night), prayer, sensitive listening and counseling.

Social Workers: The social work staff is here to provide supportive counseling regarding the psychosocial stresses associated with your child’s hospitalization and illness. They also are available to help with financial resources and discharge planning.

Technicians, Therapists and Technologists: This group includes radiology, ECHO technologists as well as physical, respiratory, speech, audiology and occupational therapists. They all provide a special skill for your child.
