Community Outreach: Loyola’s Children’s Center at Maybrook

The Loyola Children’s Center at Maybrook, jointly developed and operated by a partnership between The Ronald McDonald® Children’s Hospital of Loyola, the Circuit Court of Cook County and the County of Cook, is located on the premises of the Fourth Municipal District Court in Maywood. Since its opening in 2002, the Center has provided free child care, health screenings and other services for children while their parents and guardians are in court.

The 3,000-square-foot facility provides a comfortable setting for children to engage in supervised, age-appropriate play and educational activities. As part of the Center’s program, the Loyola and Circuit Court staff provide counseling, referral resources, crisis intervention and health-care screenings in an effort to improve children’s health and well being – all at no charge.

Each month, more than 200 children visit the Loyola Children’s Center at Maybrook. Regardless of age and background, many of the youngsters deal with stress and conflict at home. Some children come to the Center to wait until they are called to testify in angry custody battles. Others have parents who need to appear in traffic court. In more serious cases, some parents are on trial for violation of the law and some may be grappling with drug addiction. During these times, children can seem to fall through the cracks of the system. The Center’s goal is to lessen a child’s anxiety and stress by creating a fun, safe and supportive atmosphere that promotes learning, good health and self-esteem.
