Radiation
oncologists use various technologies to deliver precisely
measured doses of radiation to defined tumor areas with
minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The goals
of radiation therapy may be to eradicate tumors, relieve
disease symptoms, prolong survival and improve quality
of life. Advances are being made in the use of radiation
therapy in the management of some benign diseases as
well.
Loyola
University Health System (Loyola) offers highly trained
radiation oncology faculty and staff, the most advanced
radiation treatment equipment and leading-edge cancer
treatment programs. We offer the full spectrum of radiation
modalities, including external beam radiation therapy,
high-dose-rate and low-dose-rate brachytherapy, total
body irradiation, unfractionated and fractionated stereotactic
radiosurgery and intensity-modulated radiation therapy.
Specialty
Services
High-Precision
Radiotherapy
Loyola transitioned to three-dimensional treatment planning
and conformal radiotherapy in 1997. Now most patients
are treated with this technique, which precisely targets
radiation to the shape of the tumor.
Intensity
Modulated Radiation Therapy
This treatment is an advanced mode of high-precision
radiotherapy. Higher doses of radiation can be safely
delivered to unusually shaped tumors.
Stereotactic
Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy
This treatment is a highly precise and accurate method
of delivering radiation to brain lesions. Loyola is
first in the Midwest to use the Novalisâ stereotactic
system, which is the most advanced in the world.
High-dose-rate
Brachytherapy
The radiation source is placed inside the tumor to deliver
a high dose of radiation in only a few minutes. The
procedure is performed in the operating room or on an
outpatient basis.
Ultrasound-guided
Transperineal Prostate Implant Program
Radioactive seeds are implanted in the prostate gland
to control the growth of early-stage prostate tumors.
Research
Ongoing
research includes studies of combined chemo-radiotherapy
for lymphoma and cancers of the lung, head and neck,
breast and gastrointestinal system; dose escalation
for various cancers using three-dimensional conformal
radiation therapy; and prevention of dry mouth in patients
with head and neck cancers.
