Hematology/Oncology Services
Physicians
in this specialty provide diagnosis and management of
infants, children and adolescents with anemia, bone
marrow failure syndrome, bleeding disorders including
thrombocytopenia and coagulopathy, hemoglobinopathies
such as sickle cell disorder and other hematological
disorders. Additionally, they treat children with cancers
such as leukemia and solid tumors. The staff includes
board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologists,
certified pediatric oncology nurses, a case manager/clinical
nurse specialist, a pharmacist and a pediatric clinical
social worker.

This American Cancer Society program pairs Loyola University
Health System (Loyola) medical students with children
who have cancer in supportive Big Brother/Big Sister-type
arrangements.
Research
Through
its membership in the international Children’s
Oncology Group, the division participates in clinical
trials involving malignancies, including leukemia, lymphoma,
brain tumors, neuroblastoma, Wilms’ tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma
and other soft-tissue sarcomas and bone tumors. Other
clinical trials are attempting to improve supportive
care of patients with cancer, such as use of growth
factors to alleviate neutropenic fever and recombinant
erythropoietin to alleviate anemia due to chemotherapy.
