Neurologists
diagnose and treat disorders of the brain, spinal cord,
peripheral nerves and muscles. Loyola's neurologists
have an extensive range of expertise and broad interests
in various facets of neurology. Our physicians are internationally
recognized and involved in innovative research. All
faculty are board-certified physicians and most have
completed fellowship study in their specialty. Loyola
is equipped with the latest technologies for neurologic
care, including a specialized Neuro-intensive Care Unit,
Acute Stroke Unit and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
Loyola
works to match your needs with a neurologist best suited
to treat your condition. Your physician will work with
you to conduct appropriate testing to determine a diagnosis
and then devise a treatment strategy.

Specialty
Services
Botulinum
Toxin Injections
A special clinic for botulinum toxin injections is held for focal dystonias,
spasticity, headaches and other neurologic disorders.
Center
for Sleep Disorders
This comprehensive sleep center is equipped to perform
overnight sleep studies with polysomnography for diagnosis
and treatment of adult and pediatric sleep problems.
Epilepsy
Monitoring
The comprehensive, multidisciplinary epilepsy program
offers long-term monitoring of epilepsy patients. Synchronized
video recordings of the patient together with EEG for
prolonged periods of time allow physicians to correlate
behavior, including seizures, with changes in brain
activity.
Neurodiagnostics
Loyola neurologists use the most up-to-date technologies
to diagnosis neurologic disorders. These include neuroimaging
such as CT scan, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), CT
angiography, catheter cerebral angiography, electroencephalography
(EEG), evoked potentials (response recorded following
an electrical stimulus), transcranial Doppler ultrasonography,
prolonged EEG video monitoring (see below) and electromyography
(EMG).
Neuropsychological
Testing
A series of tests for neurocognitive function are used
for the diagnosis and planning of treatment in individuals
with brain diseases that affect thinking and behavior
such as epilepsy, dementia, movement disorders including
Parkinson’s disease, stroke and head injuries,
including those resulting from sports injuries.
Stroke
Center
Loyola's Stroke Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™
for stroke care from the Joint Commission. Services
cover every aspect of stroke care for patients and their
families. The Stroke Center cares for patients with
acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, carotid artery
disease and other complex cerebrovascular disorders
(aneurysms, cerebrovascular malformations, genetic disorders
and pediatric stroke, among others). Patients are treated
in a multidisciplinary setting in the Emergency Department,
Acute Stroke Unit, Neuro-Intensive Care Unit and dedicated
outpatient clinics.
Research
Faculty members conduct innovative clinical
trials on stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and
