Volunteer Communion Ministry Program

Each day, volunteers bring the Eucharist to Catholic patients at Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC) who have requested Communion. Each volunteer Communion minister usually comes to LUMC once or twice a month. If you would like to bring the Bread of Life to our patients and families, you first need to be trained as a Communion minister. If you have not already received this training, contact your parish or (arch)diocesan Office of Worship and tell them you are seeking this training to prepare for hospital Communion ministry.

When you have the general (arch)diocesan training for Communion ministry, call the LUMC Volunteer Office at (708) 216-3794. Before serving as a hospital Communion minister, you will need to go through the general orientation that the medical center requires of all volunteers. Then we will set up a time for specialized training with some of our chaplains for your Communion ministry with patients and families in the hospital.

Our patients and families are very appreciative of the opportunity to receive Communion. You will see it in their eyes and sometimes in their tears; you will hear it in the voices as they pray the “Our Father” with you; and you will feel their gratitude in their handshakes as you leave their hospital rooms. The staff chaplains also appreciate the volunteer communion ministers’ contribution to the pastoral care that Loyola provides to our patients and families, another way we also treat the human spirit.
