Complementary
& Alternative Medicine
The guiding philosophy of
Loyola University Health System's Complementary and Alternative
Medicine (CAM) Program is that each person's mind, body
and spirit are essentially intertwined. Focusing exclusively
on the physical manifestations of an illness may only
solve part of the problem. If an illness were a tree,
the symptoms are merely the leaves. Practitioners in this
program aim for the root to solve the problem. The first
step is to know patients well by carefully listening
to them. The
Best of Both Worlds
Therapies
based on ancient Eastern healing philosophies often
focus on correcting and maintaining a balance of physical
and emotional components. Traditional Western medicine,
on the other hand, focuses more closely on the ailment
and looks to science for solutions. When dealing with
health problems, many people want the best of both world's
the best ideas and practices of conventional medicine
combined with alternative practices, such as those developed
over centuries in Eastern cultures. Through this program,
patients can get help for a wide range of acute or chronic
illnesses or injuries. Alternative therapies can be
used in combination with or instead of traditional medical
approaches.
Scientifically
Based
Since medical
self-help and concepts of alternative medicine have
become extremely popular, people are spending billions
of dollars for unproven and even potentially dangerous
products they have learned about through advertisements.
Loyola is responding to this issue by offering treatments
that have been scientifically proven as safe and effective.
Both conventional and alternative treatments
are subjected to the same rigorous scientific scrutiny. Extensive clinical experience, a careful analysis of
the existing body of research and new studies are all relied upon.
