Application Process
Clinical Pastoral
Education (CPE) Program
The
first step in the application process is to complete
and submit the application form, along with your reflections
and responses to the questions on the back of the application.
These forms may be downloaded:

Application
materials may be submitted to Jerry Kaelin at Loyola
University Medical Center (LUMC) via e-mail attachments,
fax or the US Postal Service. When sending an application,
mail a $25 non-refundable application fee.
Along
with the application, we have included three forms for
your references. Print a copy of each form and distribute
them to your references and ask that they complete this
on your behalf and return it to LUMC. Or, you may copy
these forms and e-mail them to your references as attachments;
those people can then e-mail or fax their recommendation
directly to Jerry Kaelin at LUMC. Reference forms must be submitted to LUMC before your application can be
considered.
A
personal interview at LUMC will be scheduled following
receipt and review of your application and reference
letters. If you live outside the Chicago area, prospective interns can
arrange an interview with a supervisor in your area.
Please consult us in advance regarding your plans.
Prerequisites
for internship include: a bachelor’s degree (or
life equivalency) and a theological education acquired
through accredited courses (or other structured learning).
Prerequisites
for residency include: one previous unit of CPE; a master's
degree (or equivalency) in theology or pastoral studies
or completion of seminary education; and interviews at Loyola which include Pastoral Care and CPE staff, along with Hyman Resources.
Clinical
Pastoral Education is an adult- and student- centered
process education; it is not personal therapy or spiritual
direction. Although neither therapy nor spiritual direction
are required, we strongly recommend them during residency,
especially in light of the intensive chaplaincy work
you will be engaged in at Loyola University Health System
(Loyola/LUHS). We value the self-understanding that
therapy and spiritual direction provide. Over the years
we have found that residents who have not had personal
therapy or spiritual direction prior to beginning their
CPE training with us will often enter into either or
both during their residency. We find that concurrent
psychotherapy or spiritual direction allows more time
for focus on professional issues in the CPE setting.
Loyola chaplains do not provide therapy or spiritual
direction for CPE students, but chaplains can refer
students to competent practitioners from a variety of
professional backgrounds.
If
you have any questions, please call or e-mail. We are
happy to talk further with you about CPE at Loyola.
