The Naked Truth

Stacy McClure, MD, a dermatologist at Loyola University Health System, was asked to debunk common myths about the body’s largest organ — the skin!

Myth #1: Does lip balm dry out your lips?
Dr. McClure: “No. Your lips have a very thin layer of skin that causes them to lose moisture faster than any other part of the face. This, along with excessive licking and exposure to dry air, is what causes chapped lips — not too much lip balm. In fact, using a lip balm with sun protection factor (SPF) is recommended.”

Myth #2: Is it true that darker-skinned people don’t get skin cancer?
Dr. McClure: “Skin cancer may be less common in darker-skinned people, but it still occurs. Most people with naturally dark skin have ancestors who originally came from warm climates near the equator where there was more sun exposure year-round. Their skin genetically adapted to their environment by producing more melanin, which protected them from sun damage. When skin cancer is diagnosed in darker-skinned people, however, it is often found at later, more advanced stages than in light-skinned individuals — mainly because so many people believe this myth and don’t seek treatment or use sunscreen.”

Myth #3: Does dry skin cause wrinkles?
Dr. McClure: “Wrinkles are actually caused by sun exposure, pollution, cigarette smoke, aging and habitual facial expressions. While skin may look better when it is moisturized, there is no evidence that moisturizer has any effect on wrinkles.”
