Quality of Care at Loyola University Health System

Loyola Named Top Heart Hospital in Illinois

We at Loyola University Health System are pleased to have been named the top heart and heart surgery program in Illinois by the U.S. News & World Report's annual survey of more than 6,003 hospitals nationwide. Loyola also was ranked among the top hospitals nationwide in five other specialties including Digestive Disorders (28); Ear, Nose and Throat (28); Geriatrics (38); Hormonal Disorders (42); Orthopedics (39). Loyola is the only health-care facility in western and southwestern Cook and DuPage counties to be nationally ranked.

Our Commitment to Quality

While recognition such as this reflects external affirmation of the work we do here, true measures of how we are doing are successful patient outcomes and positive patient experiences with Loyola. We have long been committed to the quality of care and safety of our patients, and have a long history of focusing on ensuring successful patient outcomes.

We prioritize and coordinate performance improvement activities across the entire institution through our Center for Clinical Effectiveness, utilizing state-of-the-art quality and safety improvement tools and communicating results of performance improvement work both within Loyola and to consumer, health-care and academic audiences. In fact, quality improvement has become an integral part of our culture. That's important because the quality of a hospital is formed not only by a skilled, experienced team of professionals, but also by the system of operational processes and the collective experience of all those working in tandem. We have documented so many successes, that we have become somewhat of a 'poster child' for the University HealthSystem Consortium, which routinely refers representatives from other university health systems to Loyola to see how it is done.

We Support the Hospital Report Card

Loyola supports Illinois Senate Bill 59 (The Hospital Report Card Act), the Federal Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act and the Hospital Quality Information Initiative - a national voluntary initiative to collect and report hospital quality performance information. The bill is intended to empower consumers by making quality information about hospitals available to the public. Scientific measurement is the only real basis for rating the quality of health care at any hospital. Surveys, polls and other recognition, although gratifying, are not complete assessments of the quality of health care.

We applaud the work of state and federal legislators to develop patient safety standards and a quality tracking system.

Our Quality Promise

At Loyola, we also believe quality goes beyond successful surgical procedures or courses of medical treatment. Quality includes how we treat our patients and their families. We invite you to visit our Web site at www.luhs.org/quality to find out more about quality issues and our work at Loyola.
