People To Know

This is a program designed to bring celebrities, authors and people who have interesting jobs into the hospital to meet the children and adolescents. We have had Gwendolyn Brooks the Poet Laureate of Illinois and Debbie Dadey, author of The Bailey School Kids to name a few.

Graduation Presentation Ceremony

grads.JPG (30249 bytes)This program honors our chronically ill population of children and adolescents who through the many treatments therapies etc. are attaining the milestone of graduation be it from Middle School, High School or College and who have utilized the services of the Reading, Writing & Recovery School Program.

The nineth annual graduation ceremony was held in the evening of Thursday, May 24, 2001. The graduates march down the aisle to the gradinv.JPG (17369 bytes)tune of Elgar’s Pomp And Circumstance in The Paul V. Galvin Memorial Chapel at Loyola University Medical Center. Dick Johnson, news reporter for ABC channel 7 Television was the keynote speaker.  Former patient and graduate, James Murphy was guest speaker.  Our school program colors are red, yellow and teal and are reflected in the colors of cap and gowns.  Red cap & gowns with a yellow tassel are presented to  the graduates from middle school, yellow cap& gowns with a red tassel are presented to the graduates from high school and teal caps and gowns with a red, yellow and teal tassel are presented to college grads. We chose these colors with McDonalds in mind. Engraved invitations are printed and sent to the families of these patients allowing the families to invite aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and grandparents to be in attendance. There were no limitations to the number of attendees since most of the patient’s schools would only allow 2 or 3 attendees from each family to their graduation programs. We felt this is a time that all should come to honor these very special people. A grand reception including a punch fountain and four tiered cake culminates an evening of joy, encouragement and love.
