Loyola University Medical Center, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, has been providing skilled, compassionate care to its patients for 30 years. Residing on a 61-acre campus in Maywood, Illinois, LUMC includes Loyola University Hospital, the Ronald McDonaldŽ Children's Hospital of Loyola University Medical Center, Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, Burn and Shock Trauma Institute, Oncology Institute, Cardiovascular Institute, Neuroscience and Aging Institute, a Level 1 Trauma Center, Loyola Outpatient Center, Oral Health Center, and Solid Organ Transplantation Center (heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas).

Loyola is a leader in conducting groundbreaking research in the treatment of cancer, organ transplantation, heart disease, and neurological disorders. Our physicians serve not only the Chicago metropolitan area but also patients and doctors from across the nation and in foreign countries.

Loyola University Hospital
Loyola University Hospital is a teaching, tertiary care facility housing 536 beds. It has been nationally recognized for its contribution to the study and treatment of cardiovascular disease, perinatal and neonatal disorders, cancer, and burn injuries.

  • A state-designated Level 1 Trauma Center serving western Cook and DuPage counties
  • A 21-bed Burn Center servicing a four-state region

  • One of four Cranial Base Surgery Centers in the nation

  • One of 10 Perinatal Centers in the state. Loyola's perinatal network has the lowest mortality rate in Illinois for low birthweight infants

  • A 50-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

  • A Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (18 beds)

  • A unique intensive care unit solely for heart transplantation patients and a Coronary Care Unit, with mortality rates for heart bypass surgeries among the lowest in the nation

  • A 13-bed Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit

  • A 20-bed dedicated Neuroscience Floor

  • 2 State-of-the-art Neuroangiographic Units

  • A Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit

  • An Aeromedical Service that features a "flying emergency room" helicopter, Loyola LIFESTAR, available 24 hours each day, within a 150-mile radius of

Neurosurgical Offices

As part of the department's recent expansion, a new 9000 square foot office, conference, and patient care facility opened in March, 2000. This modern space allows our department to interact in a comprehensive environment combining patient care, teaching, and research space. The space includes conference rooms, radiology space, a practical surgical laboratory, residents' offices, a modern library facility, faculty offices, and support space.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS

Loyola University Medical Center is conveniently located close to O'Hare International Airport, an important consideration for patients traveling long distances to seek the most up-to-date and sophisticated medical services.

Because of its location, LUMC offers the convenience of suburban living, lower expenses, more open space, and less traffic. These amenities exist within proximity to a great metropolitan area offering cultural events, sporting events, excellent restaurants, shopping variety and convenience.

The Chicago lakefront draws people from the entire metropolitan area to enjoy the parks, bicycle and jogging paths, beaches, free concerts and architectural walks.

Chicago is home to many excellent museums and galleries, including the Art Institute, the Museum of Science and Industry the Field Museum of Natural History, Adler Planetarium and Shed Aquarium. Music lovers will enjoy the world famous Chicago Symphony Orchestra and other musical ensembles that appear at Orchestra Hall. Also, there is the Lyric Opera, the Ravinia Summer Festival and many other concert halls, special performances and nightclubs.

Restaurants offer dining to suit every taste from continental cuisine to ethnic dishes. Nearer LUMC, the Des Plaines River Forest Preserve provides miles of trails for biking, jogging and hiking. The world-famous Brookfield Zoo is only a mile away. Oak Brook Shopping Center, a few miles to the west, offers suburban locations for many downtown stores, several well-stocked bookstores and a number of excellent places for dining.

Visiting Loyola

From O'Hare Airport - Take the Tri-state Tollway (I-294) south and exit onto the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) going east. Turn right (south) onto First Avenue, and travel one mile to LUMC; travel time approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

From Midway Airport - Take Cicero Avenue (Rt. 50) north to the Stevenson Expressway (I-55). Entrance to the southbound Stevenson is on the left. Exit at First Avenue (north) and travel 5 miles to LUMC; travel time approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

From downtown Chicago - Take the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) west to First Avenue. Exit at First Avenue, turn left (south) and travel 1 mile to LUMC.

Loyola University Medical Center is also accessible by taxi, bus and train, both from downtown Chicago, O'Hare and Midway airports. Travel times will be about 90 minutes from O'Hare, and about one hour from downtown or Midway. Taxi fare is about $25-35. Train fare will be approximately $2.00. Visitor pay parking is located directly south of the hospital building in Lot #4. Metered parking runs parallel to First Avenue, east of the main Medical Center buildings.
