Faculty Senate
Meeting with Drs. Barbato and Slogoff
Present: Drs. Anthony Barbato, Lothar
Blatter, Dana Bradziunas, Bill Cannon, Kim Dell’Angela, Kim Kenton, Donna
Halinski, Michael Schneck, Stephen Slogoff, Nancy Muma
Excused: Drs. Sam Cukierman, John Godwin,
Sean Cahill, Phong Le, John McNulty
Clinician Manpower
Dr. Barbato was asked about the clinician
manpower survey. Dr. Barbato responded that LUPF has made a concerted effort to
verify how clinical faculty spend their time and to develop a common set of
expectations for clinicians should spend their time. This entails setting bench
marks for tasks and expectations for full time clinical faculty and trying to
determine the appropriate amount of work expected and matching department size
with workload. Growth of targeted programs could then be targeted with
appropriate size increases in faculty. LUPF will not directly be involved in
hiring but will play a role in coordinating recruitment activities between
departments especially in programs that cross departments. Counting RVU’s is not
the purpose of the manpower committee. The purpose is for evaluation of manpower
in clinical care by LUPF. Creating realistic and clear expectations is important
and will be accomplished by the committee.
Teaching Conventions
and BSI
Dr. Slogoff stated that new teaching
conventions are being developed so that there will not be apparent conflicts
with NIH time and effort reporting. Contact hours will not be changed only the
preparation time for teaching.
Leishner Institute
Fellows have been chosen and will be announced soon.
Faculty Senate
Elections
Faculty Senate elections are underway and
will end July 19. Part-time faculty are eligible to vote and are represented by
the Faculty Senate.
Part-time faculty
benefits
Dr. Barbato was asked about fringe benefits
packages for part-time faculty and replied to the inquiry that part-time faculty
will be treated the similarly (there are currently some differences in benefit
packages among the part-time faculty) and part-time faculty are eligible to
purchase benefits such as healthcare. Full-time faculty benefits are also being
reviewed so that all faculty are treated equally and fairly.
Faculty Senate Meeting
Plans
We discussed an open forum for discussion
of the faculty handbook which could possibly occur immediately prior to next
LUPF meeting. Dr. Barbato thought it was a marvelous idea to allow people to
preview possible changes. Contentious issues could be presented during this
meeting.
A Faculty Forum with Dr. Sheehan will be
scheduled for the fall. A combined annual meeting with a faculty senate meeting
is also planned for the fall.
Deans Search
Dr. Barbato stated that by the end of July
all of the viable candidates will have been interviewed and second round will
start (for second visits) to compose a short list. The second round will be
completed in September. Five internal and 7 external candidates were brought in
for the first round of interviews. Only 1 woman applied. Dr. Barbato has
declined to meet with faculty individually to discuss the dean candidates.
E-mails are welcome to either the committee or Dr. Barbato. Any issue concerning
the process of the search can be discussed with Dr. Barbato. Dr. Luchette is the
chair and is the only person speaking for the search committee.
