Faculty Senate Meeting with Dr. Lee

Present: Drs. Jack Lee, Dana Bradziunas, Phong Le, Nancy Muma, Alan Wolfe

Minutes of the last meeting were approved.

We discussed having an open faculty senate meeting with Dr. Lee. We will have 2-3 of these a year. The next one will be in the fall and be an address by Dr. Lee on the State of the Medical Center.

The Steering Committee will host an open meeting for the faculty with the SSOM Strategic Planning Committee to bring issues out for discussion. This will be held in the next month due to the rapid rate by which the plan is evolving. Dr. Lee would like the graduate school to work on a Strategic Plan in the future.

Dana asked what the role of the Steering Committee should be. Dr. Lee thought that we should be doing what we are currently. For example, he brought up the issue of BSI and the recommendations we discussed concerning credit for a broader number of committees rather than just those that are connected to Medical School Education.  Faculty retention has been another topic that Dr. Lee has been working on in response to discussions brought up in the steering committee meetings. Exit interviews now will occur 6 months after faculty leave. CART issues brought up at the Steering Committee include standardization of CVs and the white paper on tenure requirements.

The number of research faculty in 2002 was 110; it is the same number today.  There has been some turn over, but they have been replaced. At the next meeting we will examine who is leaving.

Dr. Lee has earmarked $350K from philanthropy for research and he would like to use it for bridge funding in addition to the amount already available through the RFC. Pilot grants also need to be funded to help get new funding.

Faculty should be recruited strategically to work with more than one department or institute. The development office has been more responsive than previously and will meet with investigators to try to find alternative sources of funding.
