Faculty Senate Meeting with Dr. Lee

Present: Drs. Jack Lee, Dana Bradziunas, Kim Dell’Angela, Kim Kenton, Nancy Muma, John McNulty, Alan Wolfe

Excused: Drs. Phong Le, John Godwin, Ken Micetich, Sean Cahill

Minutes of the last meeting were approved.

Due to Dr. Barbato’s busy schedule and with Dr. Lee being new to the position, Dr. Lee will meet with us without Dr. Barbato now and in future meetings. Dr. Lee meets with Dr. Barbato weekly and will update him on the meetings with the Faculty Senate.

Dr. Lee stated that the President wants the medical school campus to become a Health Science Center with the addition of the School of Nursing and possibly other allied health groups. We discussed that we would like to have more collaborative research between the School of Nursing and the medical school faculty.

 Expectations

Dr. Lee was asked about the purpose of CMS reporting. He replied that CMS reporting is used for Medicare reimbursement hour reporting and is not used for anything else.

Dr. Lee was asked “What is FIS used for?” He responded that FIS is used for calculating effort for those on BSI. Dr. Lee stated that as Chair of Pathology he did not use it as a faculty evaluation tool; however, some chairs may have used it more than he did. Dr. Lee now uses FIS for obtaining information such as grant funding or teaching loads.

Dr. Lee will review salary raises but does not want to address the issue of what the raises are based on yet. Dana suggested that salary changes should be discussed with individuals. Dr. Lee stated that the chairs are given an amount for salary raises and they choose how the amount will be distributed among their faculty. The chairs give raises based on their choice of method. Some give an across-the-board raise (same amount to everyone) while others choose to rank faculty and give raises in a tiered approach.

He will not comment on each of the faculty evaluations this year but will for next year. We again discussed that topic of which tasks are included in FIS and Dr. Lee agreed that some important tasks are not included under FIS. For example the CART committee is not included and is important.

At the conclusion of the meeting we discussed dates for an open meeting of the Faculty Senate with Dr. Lee. A date will be set in the near future, perhaps in March.
