Minutes

The minutes of the last meeting were approved with amendments.

Health Science Campus

Dr. Barbato informed us that the reporting line for the graduate nursing school is proposed to switch from the Provost, Dr. Facione to Dr. Barbato. This switch is likely to occur by July 1. The undergraduate nursing program will remain on the Lake Shore campus. This change is intended to increase the interaction of the nursing school faculty with the Medical Center faculty.

New Dean

Dr. Barbato reported that the committee has not been put together yet but will be before the end of the year or shortly there after. The committee will be relatively small and consistent with other search committees. Two challenges exist on this campus, research and education. The target for research funding is to move to the middle third of medical schools, i.e., 65 million in funding. There is a clear commitment to build research funding along with the new VP for research. There is also a need for curriculum leadership and innovation expected of the new dean, a reinvigoration of medical education and reform of curriculum. There is less concern about new clinical program development. The Comprehensive Campaign is an essential part of growing research. A discussion of research dollars at other Chicago research institutions followed.

A Survey of the Faculty

A survey may be valuable but there is not time before the new Dean is here. A survey could be put together by the new Dean. There was a survey of the clinical faculty recently but not the basic sciences. Dr. Barbato suggested that the faculty senate can have input into the search for a new Dean via a forum with the candidates. Consistent questioning of the candidates via the Senate would be very useful. A discussion of the open and closed portion of the search ensued. The tenure of a dean is about 3.5 years. This may be due to misperceptions of the job. The advantages of internal versus external candidates were discussed. Dr. Barbato suggested that skills and accomplishments trump going inside or going outside for the new Dean.

Faculty Development at SSOM

A question was posed concerning the value of using faculty mentorship as done at the university (undergraduate campus) as a model for the Medical Center. Dr. Barbato suggested that this steering committee could take on this responsibility. The department chairs were given this responsibility but we do not have a comprehensive program across departmental lines. Assisting individuals and chairs would be useful. The downtown model was brought up by Kim Dell’Angela as being well received. Dr. Barbato stated that there is an absence of an organizing principal and the business of people. A medical campus may have a different culture than an undergraduate campus that allows faculty development to work. Grant writing proposal teaching is being planned by Rich Kennedy. It is currently difficult to find mentoring for some specific fields at the medical center. A survey of what faculty want for faculty development would be useful. Experience instead of a course is often needed.

Faculty Handbook

It will cover part-time faculty here at Stritch. The reason for a large number of part time faculty is the need for a faculty appointment for hospital privileges. This could be stated in the handbook. 1200-1300 part-time faculty exist at the medical center. The faculty senate steering committee is suppose to represent part-time faculty as well.

New Health Care Options for retiring faculty

The outcome is highly variable.
