Research
Dr. Slogoff was asked about the
Comprehensive Campaign and provided the following information. The Comprehensive
Campaign includes raising money not only for buildings but also for endowments
and research. The Lake Shore campus under the leadership of Father Garanzini, is
now ready for a fund raising campaign. The goal at LUMC is tied to goal at LUC.
The campaign will begin with a two-year silent campaign period to acquire large
donors before going public. The silent period will continue until approximately
50% has been contributed. It will then continue for approximately 5 years. The
planning stage will develop priorities and will be completed in January. A
research building is one of the top priorities and the Medical Center leadership
has been asked to contribute their suggestions for additional priorities.
Faculty Development Report
The Faculty Development Report was
commissioned by The Office of Faculty Development and was recently disseminated
to the faculty. Dr. Slogoff was asked about how he would use the results of the
report. Dr. Slogoff’s reply: There was a huge need for faculty development that
began by addressing the need for teaching development. Dr. Slogoff felt that
teaching mentoring should be centralized but research mentoring should be
through chairs and at the departmental level. The focus group is only from small
percentage of total faculty. The total number of faculty in the Medical Center
is134 tenure track faculty and 638 total faculty.
There was a discussion of the lack of
interest in promotion from clinical faculty.
Dr. Slogoff stated
that the focus group report contained many inaccuracies such as the lack of
nurses to support research. One possible outcome in response to the report would
be to increase communication. There is a wealth of information on the Portal
System but it is difficult to access. Increasing the ease of searching within
the SSOM portal system site would be useful and Dr. Slogoff will talk to Ron
Price about this. The desire for mentoring for teaching came up in focus group
and this will be addressed through the Development Office. A full faculty survey
can also come out of the focus group report.
