MATERIALS AVAILABLE FOR EDUCATION ON SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME
In 2001
the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council (MCHC), in conjunction with the SIDS
Alliance of Illinois, convened a special Task Force to address Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Under the
leadership of Jean M. Silvestri, MD, Associate
Professor of Pediatrics at Rush University and Director of Center for Disorders
of Respiratory Control and Debra E. Weese-Mayer, MD, Professor of Pediatrics
at Rush University and Director of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, both at Rush
Children’s Hospital in Chicago, the Task Force’s charge was to develop
educational materials that could be used to educate both health care personnel
and parents on SIDS reduction strategies.
The work of the Task Force was approved in 2002 for
distribution by the MCHC Committee on Clinical, Administrative, Professional and
Emergency Services.
It is
important that hospital personnel are educated on and practice the correct
standard related to SIDS risk reduction – that of Back to Sleep. Nursing staff have the power to influence
parental behavior at home – so it is vitally important that the SIDS materials are shared
with everyone involved in direct patient care
as well as others deemed appropriate at the hospital.
