Course Description
Providing comfort and relieving
pain are fundamental elements of our healthcare practice. However, it is clear
that there are gaps in our management of pain in children. Illinois EMSC
recognizes that pediatric pain assessment and management is a challenge in the
fast pace of the Emergency Department setting. This Pediatric Pain Management in
the Emergency Department educational module provides an overview of the
essential components of pediatric pain management. It addresses pain management
standards, barriers and misconceptions, physiologic pain response in children,
pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management of pediatric pain, healthcare
professional educational recommendations, patient/family education and quality
improvement activities. Additionally, the module contains a number of resources
that have been gathered to assist with your emergency department pain management
efforts. We encourage all healthcare professionals that provide care to the
pediatric patient in your emergency department to review this module. With the
increased emphasis on pain management and the JCAHO expectation that healthcare
organizations address pain, EMSC recognizes the need to promote awareness of
optimal pediatric pain management. It is our hope that you will review your
current pain management policies, procedures and educational plan and utilize
these materials to further enhance your care of the pediatric patient.
