The medical assessment is outlined with respect to obtaining a history, physical examination, and appropriate ancillary testing. The role of the physician may encompass reporting suspected abuse; assessing the consistency of the explanation, the child's developmental capabilities, and the characteristics of the injury or injuries; and coordination with other professionals to provide immediate and long-term treatment and follow-up for victims. Accurate and timely diagnosis of children who are suspected victims of abuse can ensure appropriate evaluation, investigation, and outcomes for these children and their families.

The Illinois Department of Human Services’ (DHS) Help Me Grow / Futures for Kids Helpline, located in the Division of Community Health and Prevention, connects Illinois residents with services they may need in the areas of health, safety, development, education and social services.  It serves a primary audience of pregnant women, mothers, infants, children and teens.  The Helpline provides information and statewide referrals in more than 60 programmatic areas.  Three basic categories of calls are handled.  The first involves a quick turnaround response, where a simple local referral or information for specific services is required.  The second category requires the Helpline operator to work with the caller in clarifying the problem and identifying the appropriate services offered by DHS (or other agencies).  The third category is characterized by a caller in severe crisis, sometimes needing advocacy throughout the referral process in order to receive required services designed to relieve the crisis.
