University Physician Foundation Board of Directors
Loyola University Physician Foundation is the physician
group of Loyola University Health System. The practice
has approximately 425 physician members.
Terry Light, MD, FAAOS, FACS,
chair, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; chair and Dr. William M. Scholl Professor
of Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
& Rehabilitation, Loyola University Chicago Stritch
School of Medicine. Dr. Light earned his medical
degree from Chicago Medical School. He completed his
surgical internship and orthopaedic surgery residency
at the Yale/New Haven Hospital. He completed a fellowship
in hand surgery at Connecticut Combined Hand Surgery
Program. Dr. Light is certified by the American Board
of Orthopaedic Surgery and holds a certification in
hand surgery from the same board. His special interests
include pediatric and adult hand and wrist problems
and carpal tunnel syndrome.
W. Scott Jellish, MD, PhD, vice
chair, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; chair and professor, Department of Anesthesiology,
Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
Dr. Jellish earned his medical degree from Rush Medical
College of Rush University and his doctorate from Loyola
University Chicago. He completed his residency training
in anesthesiology and fellowship training in neuroanesthesiology
at Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Jellish
is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
His special interests include neuroanesthesia, general
anesthesia, non-heart surgery for patients with heart
disease and prevention of post-operative nausea.
Marc A. Borge, MD, FSIR, member,
Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician Foundation;
chair and associate professor, Department of Radiology,
Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
Dr. Borge earned his medical degree from the University
of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed
his residency training in radiology at the University
of North Carolina Hospitals. He also completed a fellowship
in interventional radiology at Washington University
School of Medicine. Dr. Borge holds specialty certifications
from the American Board of Radiology in diagnostic radiology
and in vascular and interventional radiology. His special
interests include aneurysms, varicose veins, hepatobiliary
disease, endovascular therapy and diagnostic, vascular
and interventional radiology, among many others.
Mark E. Cichon, DO, FACEP, FACOEP,
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; division director and associate professor,
Division of Emergency Medical Services, Department of
Surgery, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of
Medicine. Dr. Cichon earned his degree from the
Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine/Midwestern University.
He completed his residency training in emergency medicine
at Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center. Dr. Cichon is
certified in emergency medicine by the American Osteopathic
Board of Emergency Medicine. His special interests include
disaster preparedness, pre-hospital medicine and chest
pain evaluation.
Steven DeJong, MD, FACS, FACE,
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; division director and professor, Division
of General Surgery, Department of Surgery and vice chair,
Department of Surgery, Loyola University Chicago Stritch
School of Medicine (Stritch). Dr. DeJong earned
his medical degree from Stritch. He completed his residency
training in general surgery at Loyola University Medical
Center. Dr. DeJong is certified by the American Board
of Surgery. His special interests include endocrine
surgery, thyroid and parathyroid disease, adrenal gland
disorders and general surgery.
Patrick Fahey, MD, FACP, FCCP,
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; chair, Department of Medicine, and John
W. Clarke Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary
and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine,
Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
Dr. Fahey earned his medical degree from the University
of Wisconsin Medical School. He completed his residency
training in general internal medicine at St. Elizabeth’s
Medical Center of Boston. He also completed a fellowship
in pulmonary medicine at Tufts University Affiliated
Hospitals and one in pulmonary diseases at Strong Memorial
Hospital in Rochester, NY. Dr. Fahey is certified by
the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds a
specialty certification by the same board in pulmonary
disease. His special interests include lung disease,
emphysema, interstitial lung disease, occupational disease
and asthma.
Robert C. Flanigan, MD, member,
Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician Foundation;
chair and Albert J. and Clair R. Speh Professor of Urology,
Department of Urology, Loyola University Chicago Stritch
School of Medicine. Dr. Flanigan earned his medical
degree from Case Western Reserve University School of
Medicine. He completed his residency training in urology
at University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve
University. Dr. Flanigan is certified by the American
Board of Urology and by the American Board of Surgery.
His special interests include bladder, kidney, testicular
and prostate cancers.
Angelos Halaris, MD, PhD, APA, ACNP, CINP,
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; chair and professor, Department of Psychiatry
and Behavioral Neurosciences, Loyola University Chicago
Stritch School of Medicine. Dr. Halaris earned
both his medical and advanced degrees from Ludwig-Maximilians
University School of Medicine, Germany. He completed
his residency and fellowship training in psychiatry
at University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics. Dr.
Halaris is certified in psychiatry by the American Board
of Psychiatry and Neurology. His special interests include
couples therapy, depression, marital problems, bipolar
disorder, psychiatric drugs and smoking cessation.
J. Paul O’Keefe, MD, IDSA,
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; professor, Division of Infectious Diseases,
Department of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago Stritch
School of Medicine (Stritch). Dr. O’Keefe
earned his medical degree from Stritch. He completed
his residency training in general internal medicine
at Loyola University Medical Center. He completed fellowships
in infectious diseases at VA Medical Center, Los Angeles,
and at Tufts University Affiliated Hospitals in Boston.
Dr. O’Keefe is certified in both internal medicine
and infectious disease by the American Board of Internal
Medicine. His special interests include HIV/AIDS, foot
infections in diabetics, general infectious disease,
tuberculosis, infection complications in surgery, travel-related
infection, pneumonias and sexually transmitted diseases,
among others.
Ronald K. Potkul, MD, FACS, FACOG,
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; division director and professor, Division
of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics &
Gynecology, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School
of Medicine. Dr. Potkul earned his medical degree
from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
He completed his residency training in obstetrics and
gynecology at University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics.
He completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at
Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Potkul is
certified by the American Board of Obstetrics &
Gynecology and holds a specialty certification in gynecological
oncology by the same board. His special interests include
gynecologic oncology and surgery, and uterine, cervical,
vulva, ovarian and vaginal cancers.
Patrick J. Stiff, MD, ABIM, member,
Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician Foundation;
division director and Coleman Professor of Oncology,
Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine,
Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine
(Stritch); director, Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center,
Loyola University Health System. Dr. Stiff earned
his medical degree from Stritch. He completed his residency
training in general internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic
Foundation. He completed a fellowship in hematology
and medical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center. Dr. Stiff holds certifications in hematology,
internal medicine and medical oncology from the American
Board of Internal Medicine. His special interests include
leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and ovarian cancer.
Ex-Officio Members
John M. Lee, MD, PhD, FCAP, ex-officio
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; dean, Loyola University Chicago Stritch
School of Medicine (Stritch); and professor, Department
of Pathology, Stritch. Dr. Lee earned his medical
degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine
and his doctorate from the University of Illinois at
Chicago. He completed his residency training in anatomic
pathology and a fellowship in neuropathology at Massachusetts
General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Lee is certified in
both anatomic pathology and neuropathology by the American
Board of Pathology. His special interests include nerve
and muscle diseases.
Bridgid Steele, MD, ex-officio
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; medical director, Primary Care, Loyola University
Health System; and associate professor, Division of
General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, Loyola
University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. Dr.
Steele earned her medical degree from University of
Illinois College of Medicine. She completed her residency
training in general internal medicine at Loyola University
Medical Center. Dr. Steele is certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine. Her special interests include
adult medicine, primary care and practice management.
Stephen Valerio, ex-officio member,
Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician Foundation;
president and chief executive officer, Loyola University
Physician Foundation. Mr. Valerio has held his
current position since November 2004. He has spent his
entire career in academic medicine. Prior to Loyola,
Mr. Valerio held similar positions at the Indiana University
Medical Group and Jefferson University Physicians. He
also held various positions at the New York Hospital/Cornell
University Medical Center and Brigham & Women’s
Hospital. He earned his bachelor’s degree from
Towson University and his master’s degree in business
administration from University of Baltimore Merrick
School of Business.
Paul K. Whelton, MD, MSc, ex-officio
member, Board of Directors, Loyola University Physician
Foundation; president and chief executive officer, Loyola
University Health System. A native of Cork City,
Ireland, Dr. Whelton received his medical degree from
the National University of Ireland, University College
Cork, and a master of science degree in epidemiology
from the University of London School of Hygiene &
Tropical Medicine. He completed residency training in
internal medicine and a nephrology fellowship at Johns
Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, and a post-doctoral fellowship
in epidemiology at the Medical Research Council Epidemiology
and Clinical Care Unit, Northwick Park Hospital, Middlesex,
England. Dr. Whelton's special interests include the
prevention and treatment of hypertension.
