Is Loyola University Medical Center an accredited health-care organization?

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has awarded Loyola University Medical Center the current status of Accreditation with Full Standards Compliance effective as of July 24, 2004. Loyola has voluntarily participated in the JCAHO accreditation process since it opened in 1969 and continues to be reevaluated every three years.

Is Loyola University Medical Center a teaching hospital?

Yes. Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM) is part of Loyola University Health System and is a national role model in reinventing medical education to prepare students for today's health-care environment.   SSOM is one of only four Catholic-affiliated medical schools in the nation. Located on the Loyola University Medical Center campus, SSOM is working to improve the future of health-care.

LUHS has 1,322 faculty members, 452 residents, 100 fellows and 527 medical students.

What specialty care does Loyola University Medical Center offer?

Quality of Care

What is the quality of Loyola's nursing staff?

Loyola University Medical Center staffs it nurses daily according to patient acuity (patients' degree of illness) to provide the best service for each patient. Loyola uses registered nurses, patient care technicians and other assisting personnel daily to care for its patients. The mix of these positions is 77 percent registered nurses to 23 percent patient care technicians and other assisting personnel. The retention rate for Loyola nurses is 89.7 percent, which is above the national average.

What are Loyola's outcome numbers, such as death rates and frequency of complications? Is this information risk-adjusted?

Information such as death rate and complication frequency are available for specific procedures or physicians.  We encourage patients to speak with their physicians about the outcomes of particular procedures they may need to undergo.

Does Loyola have an ethics committee to advise physicians, patients or families with difficult decisions?

Yes.  The Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy supports Loyola's need for ethical consultation.  These consultation services are available for all patients, families, physicians, nurses, social workers and other health-care providers involved in a patient's care.

  
How does Loyola handle patient complaints? Do patients have a bill of rights?

Patient relations coordinators respond to complaints, concerns or grievances that patients may have. The patient relations department may be reached at (708) 216-5140.

A patient bill of rights is located in each patient's room and in the main entrance of all Loyola University Health System facilities.   


Delivery of Services

Does Loyola use a computerized prescription order-entry system?

Yes. The use of a computerized order-entry system aids in the identification of possible drug interactions and helps eliminate misinterpretation of physician handwriting.

Does Loyola have an electronic medical record?

Loyola has had an electronic medical record for several years and now is rolling out an entire electronic system called Epic. LUHS is a leader among medical centers nationwide in adopting a fully interactive medical record that is linked to service areas throughout the health system, such as the pharmacy and billing. This new system will offer many benefits to patients and physicians; the most immediate benefit will be better access to information. Patients' medical records will be available immediately whenever and wherever the physicians need it. Physicians will get information about patients' care, such as test results and communication with other physicians, more quickly and easily through electronic inboxes.

What type of follow-up services does Loyola offer patients after discharge?

Physicians work with social workers to develop specific discharge plans for each patient based on an individual's need.  A variety of services are available for Loyola patients including support groups, rehabilitation services, pastoral care services, home care and hospice.


Hospital Information

Where is Loyola University Medical Center located in relation to Chicago and other surrounding suburbs? Is Loyola accessible by public transportation?

Loyola University Medical Center is located 13 miles west of downtown Chicago and one-half mile south of the Eisenhower Expressway on First Avenue.  Public transportation also is available.

What are Loyola's visiting hours?

Visiting hours for most hospital patients are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.  Special care units have limited visiting hours.

What types of accommodations are available near the hospital for family and friends of Loyola patients?  

The area surrounding Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood has numerous accommodations available ranging from hotels and motels to YMCAs. In addition, the Ronald McDonald House Near Loyola is a 16-bedroom house that offers families of children with serious illnesses or injuries a place to stay close to the hospital.
